Japan is a part of what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire which is a group of seismically active countries that surround the Pacific Ocean. Because these countries are usually found wedged between tectonic plates, they are usually consisted of a countless number of volcanoes and are more prone to earthquakes.
The kanji for 'Nihon' (日本) literally means 'origin of the sun', referring to the fact that Japan is located east of China and appeared to be the place from which the sun rose.
